Phil Thomas
Phil Thomas was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1948, spent his early years in rural Pennsylvania
but has spent most of his adult life living in Georgia. Phil comes from a family
of talented artists and has been painting since 2002.
Phil works mainly in oils and soft pastels although he occasionally uses charcoal,
pen and ink, watercolor, and acrylics.
While much of Phil's training has been the result of self-study and research,
he has had the experience of studying with several local artists/teachers as well
as several nationally known instructors; Terry Ludwig, Kenn Backhaus, John Budicin
and Allan Flattmann. He is currently a juried member of the Atlanta Artists Center,
a member of the Southeastern Pastel Society and the Quinlan Visual Arts Center
and is past president of the Sawnee Artists Association.
"I love to paint outdoors “en plein air” and attempt to capture the fleeting
moments that portray the beauty of nature that is so quickly disappearing into
strip malls and subdivisions. Painting from life, whether it is a still life,
landscape or cityscape is a totally different experience that cannot be matched
by using photographs in the studio. I hope to share with the viewer that moment
in time that captured my vision of the natural beauty around us that we so often
take for granted."
