Durinda Cheek
ENCOURAGED by her father, Durinda began expressing herself through her art at an early age. After receiving a
master's degree in art education, she taught studio art on the university level
and at a private boys' high school. Devoting herself to painting full time now,
she paints in watercolor and oil on canvas, choosing the medium to fit the mood
of the scene.
"Although a realist painter, Durinda works with watercolor in a loose, expressive
style." Ann Nichols, Arts Writer, Chattanooga Times Free Press, 1997.
Traveling abroad she has experienced painting "en plein air" (in the open air)
in the manner of the Impressionist painters. Painting in Monet's garden, in front
of an Italian street cafe, or sketching in a Parisian park, the subjects of architecture
and landscape are her focus in the European Series.
Durinda's Southern Series of watercolor paintings are inspired by the coastal cities and environment of
the southeastern U.S, and The Homes Collection offers a selection of her commissioned house portraits. Whether working with
the jewel-like colors of a sunrise or the patterns of late afternoon cast shadows,
her paintings capture the essence of the subject.
She maintains a studio in north Georgia where she lives with her life partner,
William, and their feline companion, Clarice
