Jo Adang defines herself as a draftsperson and painter. Reproduction is not her
goal; she wanst to express a mood, a single statement, a color composition. She primarily
paints human figures, but lately, has begun to investigate expressionistic landscapes.
Adang states, "With my figurative images, I'm first attracted to a face, not
an ordinary face, one with a story in it. My aim is to create visually engaging images in which human figures communicate
with us. The paintings often lead to an imagined narrative and its implications as a conceptual
representation of the subject's thoughts. It is all in an effort to explore an
unconventional approach toward emotional and psychological investigation, and to reach a balance between two perceptions-- yours and mine.
My new paintings have brought me outside. In the landscapes I explore abstract and colorful scenery as motifs to describe the idea of infinite reality. This year I am celebrating seasons with glorious colors and light, movement of the wind, the sound of the birds. As quickly as possible, I capture that experience and cement it onto canvas. I needed this, perhaps we all do. When painting en plein air, the mind creates, the chaos of nature accentuates. In the material reality, painted objects are reproductions of the creations of the mind -- a mind that uses the chaos as an organism to deconstruct ideas, patterns, and emotions.
